It was a GOOD week for beer drinkers watching their figures. Escondido’s Stone Brewing Co. introduced its first gluten-reduced beer this week.
First, the Girl Scouts announced the addition of two gluten-free cookies and now this? The anti-gluten bandwagon is running strong.
The new beer is named Stone Delicious IPA and is described as a “citrusy ale dry-hopped exclusively with El Dorado Hops.” The brewery teamed up with San Diego-based White Labs to produce an enzyme called Clarity-Ferm, which helps break down gluten protein chains during fermentation to create a beer that’s safe for the gluten-intolerant. Be warned — the new brew is not entirely gluten-free but its levels are low enough to receive the FDA’s label of “gluten-reduced.” Stone only guarantees reduced-gluten levels in its bottled beer. The beverage is available on draft at Stone locations throughout San Diego but the company warns consumers that cross-contamination with non-gluten-reduced beer can occur when served in other restaurants or bars.
