Well, at least one convention venue is being expanded. Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina’s ballroom and outdoor patio expansion is nearing its completion date.
At a cost of $105 million, the project will increase the hotel’s event space to 280,000 square feet.
“We needed the extra space to handle the larger conventions,” said Jan Hulahan, director of sales and marketing for the downtown hotel.
It won’t compete with the convention center, she said, noting that the convention center books considerably larger shows and meetings.
The impetus here is to offer larger ballroom facilities to compete with two nearby hotels, the Manchester Grand Hyatt and the Hilton San Diego Bayfront, she said.
The Marriott will now boast two 36,000-square-foot ballrooms, both facing the waterfront. The new outdoor event space will add an additional 27,000 square feet overlooking the hotel’s marina.
Another new feature is a walkway, called Marina Walk, which will lead from Harbor Drive to the waterfront.
This added space doesn’t solve the San Diego Convention Center’s need for expansion, Hulahan said. Bigger events, such as Comic-Com, are outgrowing the current facility, she said.
Her hotel and the other two near the convention center are used by Comic-Com for events, but the pop culture gathering is still struggling for space.
