It was a Good week for:
Mission Beach, which recently started its centennial celebration without a whiff of controversy, unlike one other planned centennial celebration that's been in the news of late. The iconic beach community — home to Belmont Park — will host a series of events throughout the coming months, such as a horseshoe throwing contest and a food tasting tour. (See, it's not that hard …) Those in charge of the centennial to celebrate the 1915 Panama-California Exposition in Balboa Park might want to take notes. The Balboa Park Centennial Inc., the group previously in charge of organizing the event, blew through $2.6 million in taxpayer money before disbanding. (It was a bad week — and counting — for them.)
Anybody not flying. Do we need to explain? Um, thanks CNN.
It was a Bad week for:
Anyone hoping to be a billionaire, now that everybody's NCAA tournament bracket has been busted in some way or another. Mercer? Really? Harvard? Really again? Warren Buffett, who was going to give a cool billion to anyone who filled out a perfect bracket, actually had little to worry about, since every year a team like Mercer knocks off a slumping or overhyped traditional power, with this year Duke playing that role. Well that was worth something, if not a billion.
Us, because we predicted the San Diego State University men's basketball team would flail at the Big Dance — just like every San Diego team does in the spotlight — but it made to the Sweet 16 for just the second time in school history. Of course, the magic stopped there, thanks to Arizona, but, this being San Diego, everybody will make a big deal of the team going this far. We've never seen a city embrace modest success quite like America's Finest.
The San Diego Opera. 'Cause, sadly, the fat lady has sung.
